Description: Program in Urban Medicine: Immigrant Health Care and Care Near the End of Life. The Columbia College of Physicians & Surgeons is offering a ONE-MONTH SELECTIVE for fourth year medical students on the health care needs of vulnerable populations in New York City for February, 2001. Students gain an understanding of the special needs of new immigrants and learn how to provide care for persons near the end of life. An opening two-day training course includes seminars and walking tours and orients students to the social, cultural medical, and religious institutions of the neighborhood. Twice-weekly seminars provide an opportunity for students to meet with residents, community leaders and hospice teams to discuss topics such as "Domestic Violence" and "Alternative Medicine". Seminars on Care Near the End of Life with members of hospice teams, bereavement specialists and physicians focus on topics such as: "The Mission of Hospice,"and "The Alleviation of Physical Pain and Psychosocial Distress." The program is funded by grants from The Emily Davie and Joseph S. Kornfeld Foundation and the May and Samuel Rudin Family Foundation.
