Start Date: 01/08/08
This is a course aiming to expose beginning graduate students to the theoretical foundation of state of the art methodologies used in the biomedical sciences. Several methods will be covered each year. The specific choice of methods to be covered may vary from year to year to accommodate diversity across disciplines. The course will be taking place in the early-Spring semester and is required for all students who have not yet advanced to candidacy (have not passed their Thesis Proposal Exam). Students have the option of taking the course in their first or second year. Advanced students who desire to take the course for credit or audit are welcome.
The format of the course will be based on reading original literature utilizing methods that are presented mostly through video-taped lectures. The teaching assistants and lecturers will be available for questions. Grades will be on a Pass/Fail basis (Pass will be 70% or better) and will be determined based on homeworks (50% of the grade, answering and handing in questions pertaining to the use of methods in an assigned original paper) and on in-class tests (four in total) where questions on an assigned paper similar in style to the homework questions will be given in class.
