This is the Core III for Immunology training area students
Introductory lectures (17 hours, patient presentations (3 hours), and small groups with presentation of advanced material and review of the pertinent literature (25 hours).
The Fundamentals of Immunology course was developed to provide students with a strong background in the basic concepts of immunology. It is intended to introduce students to the organization of the immune system, how it develops functional ability, and its role in health and disease. The aim is to make sure that all students receive a solid basis in the field, and that they develop the skills to help them appreciate the excitement of current areas of research, so that they will be prepared to undertake more advanced study in the field and be able to begin to carry out original research.
The course combines lectures with small group discussions during which students have the opportunity to read review and current and landmark articles from the literature and use their critical thinking to solve problems. Three patient presentations, led by physician-scientist course faculty, help the students focus on translational aspects of immunology. At the end of this course students should understand the major organs and cells that constitute the immune system, as well as the cells and molecules that are involved in mediating responses, and how they are regulated. Both normal and pathological immune responses are covered.
